Bear stories in Robin Wood

Bear stories in Robin Wood

Bears

We begin the year by going on a bear hunt. Enjoying lots of familiar bear stories. Children love spending time in the three bears’ cottage in our outdoor area, investigating a range of teddies, and even bringing their teddy from home for a teddy bears’ picnic in our own Robin Wood.

Exploring light and dark

Exploring light and dark

Light and Dark

At the beginning of November, we creatively investigate a range of celebrations, from sparkly firework pictures and creative movement, to making colourful divas. Pupils enjoy contrasting light with dark through a range of stories and poems such a Allan Ahlberg’s Funnybones.

Nursery Rhymes

Can we save Humpty Dumpty from a nasty fall, or help the cow jump over the moon? These are just two of the many problems pupils try to solve during our nursery rhyme topic.

Pupils take to the soap box to attempt our rhyme challenge, reciting ten nursery rhymes from memory.

Identifying mini beasts

Once upon a time …

Dare you cross the bridge when there’s a troll about? Children love to create their own bridges from recycled materials and to make a house that the big bad wolf can’t blow down.

We make story boards of traditional tales and enjoy enthusiastically retelling and reenacting the stories in puppet shows and role play.

All about me

We celebrate the fact that we’re all different and all special. We embrace the diversity of our family backgrounds and encourage the children to share their experiences. It’s great to find out what jobs our parents do and we love to hear parents tell us about their work when they visit our classroom.

It’s fun to learn about our bodies too and we invite parents with babies to bring them in and meet the class.

Mini beasts

Through an author study of Eric Carle, we use a variety of his stories to help us investigate mini beasts. Visits to Whirlow and Robin Wood give us hands on experience to explore and identify creatures and habitats.

Eric Carle’s art work inspires a range of creative and colourful activities.

Performance..

We learn about the Christmas story and each year we learn songs and do a nativity performance for parents and older pupils in school.

Fun phonics!

Read Write Inc forms the basis of our phonics teaching sequence. We use lots of games, songs and activities to consolidate our skills.

We very much value our partnership with parents as we embark on this learning journey together.
