Learning a Language at Loxley Primary School
Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. At Loxley, we aim to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Although we introduce children to a variety of languages through Arts Weeks, topics and after school clubs, the language that we teach through KS2 is French. Our language teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We provide opportunities for the children to communicate for practical purposes and learn new ways of thinking. Our aim is that our language teaching will provide the foundation for continuing to learn French as they move on to secondary school or to learn further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries if they choose to do so.
National Curriculum
The twelve aims as set out in the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for Languages are revisited throughout the four year scheme across engaging units of work that are based on familiar themes.
What will a Loxley Linguist Look Like?
We endeavour to give the children at Loxley a wide range of experiences in French. In aiming high together, we aspire that during their time at our school, a Loxley linguist will be able to;
· Listen attentively to spoken language and participate appropriately
· Engage in conversations
· Ask and answer questions
· Continually improve upon their pronunciation and intonation
· Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
· Write simple words and phrases
· Appreciate French stories, songs, poems and rhymes
